Porthcawl 33 Aberavon Green Stars 17

Porthcawl welcomed old foes the Green Stars to South Road, seeking to extend their unbeaten record for the season, especially following the sound win at Abercrave the previous week.

With hooker Jack Williams unavailable, the reliable Gavin Williams again stepped in as makeshift hooker, alongside Jamie Uren, enjoying a start in place of sub Tim Lunn at loosehead.

The first half was a slow affair, despite Skipper Richard Hnyda and fellow lock Nick Nutman, along with Leon McNally, controlling the lines-out, with the Stars having a slightly better time of it at the scrums. There was just one try from Porthcawl, scored by Morgan Haylock who stepped in at scrum-half. Josh White converted for 7-nil before the Green Stars got points on the board when a penalty was given for a Porthcawl off-side, leaving the half-time score at 7-3 to the home side.

The second spell was a better half altogether, with both sides managing to get tries on the board. With Man-of-the-Match Jon Phillips for the home side, leading the way with an interception try, the Seaweeds racked up three others through returning centre Gareth Rees, skipper Hnyda and McNally, with White’s accomplished boot yet again providing the extra conversion points to three of these.

The Green Stars themselves profited from some good fortune for their efforts, forcing home errors into a couple of interceptions, one leading directly to a try, the other leading up to the ruck which set up the second try. With both tries converted, a match that turned out to be somewhat erratic in parts yet entertaining overall at 33-17 to Porthcawl at the final whistle, saw them hop back to the League top-spot as Bridgend Sports went down heavily at Swansea Uplands.

Porthcawl and the Sports meet in the league again in two weeks at the Bandstand Field but in between the Seaweeds visit Pontycymmer in the next round of the WRU Bowl competition on Saturday. A good win at Lawrence Park, by no means an easy feat, could see the Seaweeds going to Bridgend still unbeaten, so plenty to aim for, with coach Rhys James stressing the need for concentration on the challenge ahead.
